The Architect of the Credit Management Profession in Nigeria
Professor Chris Onalo, FICA, is a visionary institution-builder widely acknowledged as the driving force behind the establishment of credit management as a chartered profession in Nigeria. As the Founding Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA), a chartered institute, he provided the intellectual leadership, policy advocacy, and sustained drive that culminated in the enactment of the NICA Act No. 26 of 2022.
This development marked the transition from the Institute of Credit Administration (ICA), founded in 1992 as a non-profit organisation under the law establishing Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission, to the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA).
He is recognised across Nigeria and Africa as a strong and steadfast advocate for the development of a credit economy—an ecosystem in which access to finance is disciplined, ethical, and deliberately deployed to promote productivity and financial inclusion.

This appointment is a significant accolade that should be prominently included in the appointee’s professional profile. It represents one of the top-tier teaching grades in the field.
The Chartered Credit Administrator (CCA) certification programme of the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA) is a rigorous three-year learning activity designed to produce highly competent professionals with exceptional skills in the art and science of credit management. The programme covers all sectors of the credit industry, both nationally and internationally.
This robust blend of professional and academic programmes is structured into three modules – Associate, Member, and Fellow. These modules are designed to promote local and global recognition and adoption of best practices in credit management. Each module is divided into two parts: the first part runs for six months, followed by another six months for the second part, making each module a twelve-month certification study programme. The programme begins with the Associate module and progresses through to the Fellow module, the final stage for qualifying as a CCCA.
To ensure that our learners successfully complete the curriculum and fully engage with the approved coursework and assignments required for the CCA programme, the chosen learning delivery method is virtual classes conducted via Zoom.
Upon successful completion of one or all three modules, learners will be eligible to earn an executive academic degree at the Postgraduate level, such as a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Credit Administration Management. These degrees can be awarded by recognized and accredited universities around the world that are either already offering this program or are interested in doing so for the credit management professional community.
The Postgraduate School of Credit & Financial Management (PSCFM) serves as both the Administrator and Conductor of NICA’s CCCA Certification programme, which NICA oversees to ensure compliance with the highest standards.
