The Architect of Credit Management Profession in Nigeria

Professor Chris Onalo, FICA, is the visionary institution-builder widely acknowledged as the arrowhead behind the founding of credit management as a chartered profession in Nigeria. As the Founding Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA), chartered, he provided the intellectual leadership, policy advocacy, and relentless drive that culminated in the enactment of NICA Act No. 26 of 2022. This ended the initial name of “Institute of Credit Administration – ICA, founded in 1992 as a non-profit organisation under the law that established Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission.

He is recognized across Nigeria and Africa as the strongest and most steadfast advocate for the development of a credit economy — an ecosystem where access to finance is disciplined, ethical, and deliberately deployed for productivity and inclusion.

Academic Excellence and Educational Leadership
A scholar of distinction, Professor Onalo holds Bachelor, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Credit and Financial Management. His scholarship is defined by the translation of theory into practice. For over four decades, he has served as a teacher, examiner, and instructor of credit management education, mentoring thousands of practitioners across credit granting institutions including banks, fin-techs, DFIs, microfinance institutions, and others. His curricula and lectures have become the intellectual foundation for professional credit management training in Nigeria.

Landmark National Achievements
Through his most humble and persistent efforts, the Federal Government of Nigeria responded to the national justification to proclaim credit management a national profession, with its qualifications nationally recognized. The proclamation vested in the Institute the statutory authority for the governance of credit management professional practice in Nigeria. This historic milestone was marked on October 22, 2024, in Lagos, during the Institute’s Annual National Credit Managers Conference.
Deepening this collaboration, the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2026 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NICA and five other professional bodies. The MOU mandates the deployment of expertise for the free training of Ten (10) million Nigerians, with priority for women and youth, under the National Credit and Financial Inclusion Programme. The objective is to deepen access to credit and finance for MSMEs and accelerate economic participation.
Further advancing his vision for academic institutionalization, Professor Onalo leveraged the Federal Government’s proclamation to collaborate with the National Universities Commission (NUC) through Bells University of Technology, Ota. This collaboration introduced Credit Administration as a course of study to be offered by Nigerian universities, based on a robust curriculum jointly developed by the parties.

Institutional Initiatives and National Impact
Professor Onalo is the initiator of numerous credit management-related programmes in Nigeria. These include professional certification pathways, ethical standards frameworks, and capacity-building interventions designed to de-risk credit-granting transactions, improve asset quality, and expand access to credit to the real sector.
His work has repositioned credit management as a national economic infrastructure — central to job creation, MSME growth, and sustainable development.

Beyond intellect and achievement, Professor Onalo is distinguished by exemplary character. He is renowned for extreme honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, and righteousness in all his ways. These values have earned him the confidence of government, regulators, industry leaders, and students.
He is a proud Nigerian from Elele, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State. Professor Onalo is married with children, and embodies the balance of national service and strong family values.
